In Oracle’s second annual multicloud survey, 451 Research, part of S&P Global Market Intelligence, was commissioned to conduct a multicloud survey in North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and Latin America. The survey was conducted during the third quarter of 2022 with a cross-industry sample of 1,500 enterprise respondents.

Enterprise is defined as an organization with more than 1,000 full-time employees in North America or more than 500 in other regions.

Multicloud refers to leveraging more than one cloud solution for your enterprise operations.

The results indicate that multicloud is the new reality in enterprise technology, with 98% of enterprises surveyed already using or planning to use multicloud. 90% of respondents agree that the COVID-19 pandemic has been a strong driver of greater interest and investment in cloud technology. Adopting a multicloud strategy allowed enterprises to gain flexibility and scalability as new challenges occurred, such as increased levels of remote work and collaboration with new business partners and suppliers.

Key Findings from Study:

How many IaaS or PaaS public cloud providers do enterprises use or plan to use in their IT environment?

  • 98% of enterprises surveyed are using or planning to use at least two cloud infrastructure providers, and 31% use four or more.
  • 96% reported using or planning to use at least two cloud application providers, with 45% using cloud applications from five or more providers.

What drives demand for multicloud strategies?

  • The top two drivers of multicloud strategies in enterprises are data sovereignty (41%) and cost optimization (40%).
  • Other drivers of multicloud strategies include business agility and innovation (30%), best-of-breed cloud services and applications (25%), and cloud vendor lock-in concerns (25%).

What are your organization’s most important current and future uses for multicloud

  • 54% of respondents reported that data redundancy is the most anticipated future use case, followed by data mobility (49%) and cost optimization across public clouds (42%).
  • 40% of IT departments plan to use multicloud strategies for risk mitigation for the entire IT environment, and 38% use multicloud strategies for geographic expansion or global service delivery.
