Do not be fooled! Many of the so-called “benefits” of multicloud are oversold or are based on out-of-date reasoning. At the conclusion of this article, you will have the facts you need to clearly identify and dispel long-standing myths about multicloud solution deployments.
Multicloud environments offer a range of benefits over their single-cloud counterparts, but as multicloud deployments are becoming more popular and multicloud integration is maturing, multicloud users and cloud solution providers (CSPs) are determining what really matters in a multicloud environment.
In this post, we will be fixing the record on the three leading multicloud myths that have been circulating about for far too long.
This myth is pervasive, probably because cloud vendors themselves still quote this feature as a selling point – although they know that portability is not truly feasible for many of their customers.
Cloud services and solutions were originally marketed as a remedy for vendor lock-in — which they are — because cloud solutions are typically paid for by annual or monthly subscription costs. These do not require as large of an upfront investment of capital from enterprises.
In theory, this means that your organization could easily port data from one cloud solution to another if the cloud vendor is not meeting your needs but, in practice, porting data is a tremendous headache. Unless your company is suffering under repeated SLA breaches from your cloud vendor, it is usually a smarter choice to fill in the gaps of a missing service or capability using a third-party cloud add-on, rather than going through the process of replacing your entire cloud system. (If this situation sounds familiar to you, clearly you have worked with legacy, on-premises solutions and experienced this same phenomenon with them.)
With a multicloud setup, enterprise I&O leaders often believe that portability is much more of an attainable reality, due to the range of already-existing alternate cloud vendor relationships. However, multicloud does not make data migration significantly easier or less disruptive.
As such, perceived portability also does not work as an effective bargaining chip that gives the upper hand to enterprises during negotiations. Cloud vendors know that your company is unlikely to leave their services entirely as long as they keep providing value to you through new features and cost savings.
It is important to remember, however, that portability is still of value for cloud solutions – specifically in terms of data portability and integration with other commonly used business technology services. As you are investigating various cloud solutions, specifically in the SaaS sphere, ask cloud vendors about your ability to port your data into different business technologies, such as reports into Excel, or dashboards into PowerBI or Tableau.
Surprisingly, some SaaS options do not feature a fast and easy method to integrate data, and still require you to manually export data out of the system and painstakingly import it into various spreadsheets for internal manipulation.
The myth of lowered cloud TCO (total cost of ownership) is also a long-standing, pervasive myth – perhaps because it continues to be a talking point among less experienced cloud solution resellers.
It does not take a financial expert to determine that paying a subscription fee each year forever will be more expensive in the long run than having a set product price that you pay once. However, it appears that the low entry pricing for cloud services generated a myth that cloud costs less than on-premises solutions.
Clearly, if cloud costs more over time than a single equipment purchase or software license, multicloud environments will cost more as well because your organization will be paying for multiple cloud subscriptions over multiple years.
However, the comparison of total cost of ownership may be a false comparison when it comes to cloud. In fact, since cloud services and solutions typically come with built-in patches and include updates over time, with new features released as often as every few months, cloud subscription costs may be more accurately compared to the cost of purchasing a business technology solution and also purchasing all of the upgrades and updates to that solution over time.
For example, you may have recently made the move to Windows 10 because prior Windows operating systems were retired. If Windows had been a cloud-based OS, you would not have had to purchase an all-new operating system. Instead, it is likely you would have received that system as an automatic update to your existing cloud setup. In that case, you would have saved on the upfront cost of the new OS purchase because it would already be included as a part of your ongoing subscription price.
The same benefits and cost savings apply to multicloud setups. To draw our analogy out further, we could imagine that instead of continuing solely with Microsoft Windows, you were interested in installing a new OS that integrated seamlessly with manufacturing IoT devices. If both were cloud operating systems, it is highly probable that you would be able to afford the ongoing subscription cost for your Windows OS for your office computers and also easily add the new OS for your IoT devices – all for less than the CapEx investment cost of purchasing two new perpetual-licensed operating systems.
In that case, multicloud would be less expensive than multiple on-premises deployments.
As for the misconception that multicloud environments can eliminate IT risk, this is only partly a myth. In fact, with better wording, this statement would be truth!
As an I&O leader, you understand clearly that nothing can fully eliminate risk. Your job is to limit risk as much as possible, and therefore you seek out systems and solutions that mitigate risk effectively.
As a risk mitigator, multicloud is actually one of your best choices. This is because properly set up and configured multicloud solutions provide multiple backups of your data. Modern cloud solutions such as DRaaS (disaster recovery as a service) create a full image-based replica of your systems in real time, which provides a seamless failover when needed.
DRaaS is also a highly effective solution for applying rolling updates and testing updates and patches. Both of these processes also result in greater system resiliency and better risk mitigation.
Incorrect setups of cloud or multicloud solutions will counterproductively enhance risk, in terms of compliance, security, failover, and data integrity.
