In our last article, I discussed some of the steps that business leaders can take to build their unique roadmap to the cloud, following the methodologies of experienced Oracle consulting firms. In today’s article, you’ll learn more steps that Oracle consulting firms use to migrate your business to the cloud.
Ready? Let’s dive in. Or, rather, let’s dive “up,” since we’re talking about the cloud.
In the last article, we were using a metaphor of vacationing in Spain. To continue that metaphor, you wouldn’t plan a long-term vacation to Spain if you couldn’t speak a single word of the language. You also wouldn’t want to plan a lengthy vacation if you had a massive project due during your time off.
Similarly, you wouldn’t want to plan your journey to the cloud if your IT team doesn’t “speak the language” (understand the IT requirements of the cloud), or if you don’t have time because your busy quarter will hit during the transition.
To think like the cloud-focused consulting firms, you’ll want to:
Take action: This step is one of the hardest you’ll encounter in your journey to the cloud. To determine IT skill sets, you’ll have to face “known knowns and known unknowns”… and it’s all those unknowns that can cause delays in your business transformation.
To plan your timing properly, you’ll need to know how much you’ll need to change before your move to the cloud. Will your team need to increase their skill sets and certifications? Will you need to re-architect your systems? Will you need to modernize spaghetti IT or re-platform your apps? Will you run into licensing issues when you move apps off-premises?
Consulting firms can speed the process by taking an experienced look at your current setup, creating realistic timelines, and using well-trained skill sets, but if you and your team are still learning about the cloud, you’ll probably want to devote some serious planning hours to this part of the process.
I’ve been talking about a vague trip “to Spain,” but we all know that just visiting a random part of Spain isn’t likely to be fulfilling for your vacation. To make the most of your time there, you’ll want to plan activities and destinations. Do you want to check out the architecture of Barcelona… or the art of Madrid? Eat world-class tapas in Seville… or spend all night drinking in Salamanca? I’m guessing that some of these options sound better to you than others. (Writing this article is making me want to plan a trip to Spain!)
Similarly, your business goals will lead you to specific cloud areas, and planning those out will be the next step for building your cloud roadmap. Instead of asking you about food, drinks, and architecture, experienced Oracle Cloud consulting firms will ask you about your exact business needs and preferences.
You can duplicate this process when you ask yourself:
And the most important question of all:
Once you have these questions answered in detail, you’ll know what types of cloud options are the best fit for your unique needs, and you’ll know which “destinations” you’ll want to include on your cloud journey.
Take action: Work with each of your business units to determine your current setup, as well as your future plans and preferences. Though you identified your overarching business goals in Step 1, this stage of the process takes mini-goals into account, such as what each business unit needs to accomplish and what their preferences are. Remember, in our fictional “trip to Spain,” you’re not traveling alone; you’re bringing along your whole company. You’ll need to plan your destinations accordingly to all their interests and preferences too.
Feeling a little overwhelmed by the stages I’ve listed so far? It’s easy to get help.
